The land is the economy. The economy is the land.
So went a Zanu-PF slogan during the 2000 election campaign. Responding to the hunger for land among poor Zimbabweans and opportunistically using it as a cheap ploy to stem the growing unpopularity of his party, President Robert Mugabe sought to appeal to the millions who had been waiting for land since independence in 1980.
