Land claimants receive R56m payout

Land claimants from Roosboom near Ladysmith in KwaZulu-Natal have received a payout of R56-million.
The payment was one of the largest in the province to date.
The handover was made on Saturday with compensation vouchers being handed to 581 claimants.
According to The Mercury, the Roosboom community was once a “black spot” which under the 1936 Native Trust Land Act was a term that referred to black-owned farms that were surrounded by white farms. The apartheid government’s aim was to remove the so-called black spots through forced removals.
